Nutritionist vs. Registered Dietitian The term "nutritionist" has no legal definition and there is no standard of education or training. Therefore, anyone could use the title "nutritionist" even if they have no background in the nutrition and health field. A "nutritionist" however, is commonly defined as a person who advises people on dietary matters relating to health, wellbeing and optimal nutrition. The truth is that anyone can open up shop as a "nutritionist". On the other hand, the Registered Dietitian (RD) is a qualified, trained professional who has fulfilled academic and an experience requirement established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and has completed a rigorous professional level exam and must maintain ongoing continuing education to maintain his or her credentials. The RD credential is a nationally recognized title and is a legally protected term. A dietitian specializes in menu planning, diet therapy, nutrition research, counseling, and nutrition education. A Dietitian can practice as a "nutritionist", but a "nutritionist" cannot work as a Dietitian. Some RDs may refer to themselves as "nutritionist" because the public is likely to understand and recognize the term, but the credential to look for is the RD.
